Overview
Kansanshi is one of Africa's largest copper-gold mines and First Quantum Minerals' flagship operation, located near Solwezi in Zambia's North-Western Province. First Quantum acquired its interest in 2001 and brought the mine into commercial production in 2005.
In August 2025, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema officially commissioned the $1.25 billion S3 Expansion, Zambia's largest mining investment in more than a decade. The expansion includes a new 25 Mtpa processing plant, an extended South East Dome pit, and a 25% increase in smelter throughput capacity. S3 will lift Kansanshi's output from approximately 170,000 tonnes to around 280,000 tonnes per annum and extends the mine life to at least 2046, with processing to 2049.
First Quantum's Kansanshi and Sentinel mines produced a combined 431,000 tonnes of copper in 2024, exceeding guidance. With Cobre Panamá offline, Zambia now accounts for over 90% of FQM's output. FQM has committed 170,000 tonnes of freight via the Lobito Corridor (in partnership with Kobaloni Energy), positioning these Zambian operations as key corridor anchor clients.
In August 2025, Royal Gold acquired a $1 billion gold stream referenced to Kansanshi's copper production, reflecting confidence in the mine's long-term production profile. Gold deliveries are expected to average 35,000–40,000 ounces per year over the next decade.
Operations
Kansanshi operates as a large-scale open-pit copper-gold mine with multiple ore types (oxide, mixed, and sulphide). The S3 expansion added a standalone processing plant handling low-grade stockpiled material, with higher-grade ore from the South East Dome pit feeding in from 2027.
The Kansanshi copper smelter, commissioned in 2015, has been upgraded as part of S3 with approximately 25% increased throughput capacity. The mine employs over 10,000 workers across mining, processing, smelting, and support services, with S3 adding approximately 900 permanent jobs.
First Quantum's updated guidance projects Kansanshi production of 160,000–190,000 tonnes copper for 2025, rising to 210,000–240,000 tonnes by 2027 as S3 ramps up. Combined with Sentinel's 200,000–230,000 tonne target, FQM expects approximately 480,000 tonnes of Zambian copper by 2027.
Power supply remains a challenge. First Quantum is sourcing up to 60% of electricity from imports during S3 ramp-up, having extended supplementary power arrangements with regional third-party energy traders.
Corridor Connection
Kansanshi is located in Zambia's North-Western Province, approximately 400 km northwest of Ndola and 10 km from the town of Solwezi. While currently reliant on road and rail transport via Zambia's existing network, Kansanshi stands to benefit from the proposed Zambia greenfield extension of the Lobito Corridor, which would connect Zambia's copper belt to the Atlantic via a new rail link. FQM has committed 170,000 tonnes of annual freight via the Lobito Corridor in partnership with Kobaloni Energy. With post-S3 production targeting 280,000 tonnes annually, Kansanshi is one of the corridor's most important committed Zambian clients.
Diligence Focus
Why it matters: Kansanshi is the clearest committed Zambian cargo story for the Lobito extension. The $1.25 billion S3 expansion, 170,000-tonne freight commitment, and target of roughly 280,000 tonnes per year make it central to the extension's revenue case.
What to monitor: S3 ramp-up against 2027 targets, power-import dependence, smelter emissions control, Solwezi community pressure, and whether local supplier development keeps pace with the expanded mine footprint.
Community Impact
Kansanshi is the largest single employer in the North-Western Province and a significant economic driver for Solwezi and surrounding communities. The mine contributes to infrastructure, education, and health services in the region.
The S3 expansion has been framed by President Hichilema as central to Zambia's economic vision, with FQM's $1.25 billion investment described as a vote of confidence in the country's mining-friendly policy direction. The mine has also been highlighted as a model for local supplier development, with goods and services actively sourced from local businesses.
Environmental Profile
Large-scale open-pit mining creates significant land disturbance. The extension of the South East Dome pit as part of S3 expands the mining footprint.
Water management is an ongoing priority, including pit dewatering, tailings management, and acid mine drainage prevention. The mine's smelter operations generate sulphur dioxide emissions requiring control measures.
The Enterprise Nickel operation, integrated into S3, introduces additional mineral processing and associated environmental management requirements.
ESG Assessment
ESG assessment pending. First Quantum has committed to responsible mining practices in Zambia. Key assessment areas include power supply sustainability, community benefit-sharing, local procurement, and environmental management of the expanded operation.

Independent ESG Assessment
Our independent ESG assessment evaluates this operation's environmental management, social impact, governance quality, and disclosure transparency. Environmental assessment covers water management, waste handling, air emissions, biodiversity impacts, and mine closure planning. Social assessment examines community relations, employment practices, local procurement, benefit-sharing, and human rights performance. Governance assessment evaluates corporate transparency, anti-corruption measures, and stakeholder engagement quality.
Assessment findings are incorporated into our quarterly Corridor ESG Scorecards, providing stakeholders with comparable, independent ratings across all major corridor mining operations. Operations meeting our assessment thresholds are eligible for verified ESG ratings issued from our evidence archive — verifiable reputation signals that differentiate responsible operators from those whose ESG claims are unsubstantiated. Rating publication requires demonstrated performance, not just policy commitments.
Community Impact Monitoring
Community impact monitoring around this operation tracks the full spectrum of mining effects on surrounding populations. Employment and procurement spending quantify direct economic benefits to local communities. Environmental monitoring tracks water quality, air quality, and ecosystem health in areas affected by operations. Community consultation processes are evaluated for meaningful participation versus performative compliance. Grievance mechanisms are assessed for accessibility, responsiveness, and outcome fairness.
Our monitoring provides the independent verification that enables stakeholders — investors, regulators, civil society, and affected communities themselves — to assess whether this operation delivers the community benefits that its social licence to operate requires. Documentation is preserved on our source evidence archive, creating permanent records that support long-term accountability and prevent the revisionism that undermines community claims when corporate memory proves conveniently selective.
