Regional Diamond Output
Angola is Africa's third-largest diamond producer by value and the world's sixth-largest by volume, with output concentrated in the Lunda Norte and Lunda Sul provinces. The DRC produces mainly industrial-grade diamonds from artisanal operations in Kasai province. Zambia, while not a major diamond producer, hosts world-class emerald deposits at Kagem.
| Country | 2024 Volume (Mct) | 2024 Value ($M) | Primary Producer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Angola | 9.2 | 1,850 | Catoca |
| DRC | 12.5 | 180 | Artisanal (MIBA region) |
| Zambia | 0.3 (emeralds) | 420 | Kagem |
Angola Production
The Catoca diamond mine, operated by Sociedade Mineira de Catoca (a joint venture including Endiama, Alrosa, and Odebrecht), is Angola's flagship operation producing approximately 6–7 million carats annually. The Lulo alluvial diamond project (Lucapa Diamond Company) has produced some of the world's largest gem-quality diamonds, including multiple stones over 100 carats.
Angola's diamond sector is overseen by Endiama, the state diamond company. Recent reforms under the Angola Mining Code aim to attract additional exploration investment and diversify beyond the Catoca operation.
DRC Production
The DRC's diamond production is predominantly artisanal, concentrated in the Kasai provinces. Output is primarily industrial-grade, with limited gem-quality production. The historical MIBA (Société Minière de Bakwanga) operation has struggled with underfunding and governance issues. Artisanal diamond mining provides livelihoods for an estimated 1–2 million people but faces challenges around smuggling, conflict financing, and Kimberley Process compliance.
Zambia Emeralds & Gems
While Zambia's diamond production is minimal, the country is the world's second-largest emerald producer. Kagem, operated by Gemfields, produces some of the finest emeralds globally. The gemstone sector provides an important non-copper revenue stream and demonstrates the corridor region's mineral diversity.
Market Outlook
Natural diamond markets face disruption from lab-grown alternatives and evolving luxury consumer preferences. Angola's strategy of upstream value addition through local cutting and polishing facilities aims to capture more of the value chain. The corridor provides transport infrastructure connecting Angola's diamond regions to international markets, though diamonds are typically exported by air rather than rail.
